Descript Pricing 2026, with five plan columns (Free, Hobbyist, Creator, Business and Enterprise) under a monthly or yearly billing switch

Descript costs $16 to $50 per person a month billed yearly, or $24 to $65 billed monthly. That works out to $192 to $600 a year for one person on annual billing. The Free plan is real but small: one media hour a month and 720p exports with a watermark. Watermark-free export starts at Hobbyist, and 4K export starts at Creator.

Prices checked on 10 October 2026. Every figure below is what Descript’s own pricing page (descript.com/pricing) or help center (help.descript.com) stated on that date, in US dollars. Nothing here was tested.

What each Descript plan costs, monthly and yearly

Descript prices every paid plan per person, per month, with a monthly or annual toggle. On annual billing you pay all 12 months up front, so Hobbyist is one $192 charge, not $16 a month.

Prices per person from descript.com/pricing, checked 10 October 2026. Yearly totals are our multiplication, before tax.

Descript says annual billing saves “up to 35%”. On these prices the saving is 33% on Hobbyist, 31% on Creator and 23% on Business. Switching from monthly to annual takes effect immediately. Switching back to monthly waits for the end of the year you paid for, per the billing overview in Descript’s help center.

Each Descript drive has its own subscription. If you own two drives, you pay for two plans.

Hobbyist or Creator?

Creator costs $8 a month more on annual billing and adds 4K export, 30 media hours a month instead of 10, and 800 AI credits instead of 400. It is also the cheapest plan that can buy top ups, so if you might run out of media hours mid-month, Creator lets you buy more. On Hobbyist the only way to get more is to upgrade.

What every plan includes, and where the limits are

Price is only half of a Descript plan. The other half is a monthly allowance of media minutes and AI credits, and that allowance is usually what pushes people up a tier.

Every plan, including Free, has unlimited projects, transcription in 25 languages, speaker detection, dynamic captions, screen recording and shareable web pages. Free includes a limited taste of caption translation (61 languages) and audio dubbing (30); paid plans include both. Business adds translation proofreading, team-wide Brand Studio and priority support with an SLA.

Is Descript free? What the Free plan allows

Yes, there is a Free plan, and you do not need a credit card to start. Here is what it gives you, from Descript’s pricing page on 10 October 2026:

  • 60 media minutes a month. Recording in Descript and uploading files both use them.
  • 100 AI credits, one time. They do not refill each month. Studio Sound, filler word removal, Underlord and AI speech all spend them.
  • 720p export, with a watermark. Watermark-free export starts at Hobbyist.
  • 5GB of cloud storage and a 1GB limit on each upload.
  • Screen recording, transcription and captions are included.

So the Free plan is a way to try editing by text, not a way to publish. A screen tutorial for YouTube or a course usually needs at least 1080p without a watermark, which means Hobbyist at $16 a month billed yearly.

Media hours and AI credits, in plain language

Media minutes measure how much video and audio goes into Descript. Descript’s media minutes guide in its help center says they are used when you upload audio or video, record directly in Descript, or add still images (1 second each). The FAQ on its pricing page says media hours count uploads and recordings “regardless of whether they’re transcribed”. Unused minutes do not roll over, and the allowance resets when your subscription renews.

AI credits are spent on AI features: Underlord, Studio Sound, Remove Filler Words, Green Screen, Eye Contact, AI speech, avatars and generated video. Descript warns that even chatting with Underlord uses a few credits per message. Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words cap at 30 credits per use, however long the file.

If you run out, Creator and Business can buy top ups, priced in Descript’s help center. Hobbyist and Free cannot, so on Hobbyist the way out is to upgrade.

Top upPricePer unit
5 media hours$25$5.00 an hour
20 media hours$80$4.00 an hour
50 media hours$150$3.00 an hour
350 AI credits$35$0.10 a credit
1,000 AI credits$80$0.08 a credit
4,000 AI credits$200$0.05 a credit

Top ups are shared across the drive, are used only after the monthly allowance runs out, expire 12 months after purchase and are non-refundable.

Descript screen recording: what it costs and what the recorder does

Descript’s screen recorder is built into the app. Per its pricing page and the screen recorder guide in its help center, checked 10 October 2026:

  • It is on every plan, including Free. You do not pay extra for the recorder itself.
  • Every recorded minute counts against your media minutes, the same as an upload.
  • Each recording can run up to 4 hours.
  • It uploads to the cloud while you record, so it needs a steady connection.
  • Zoom is not automatic. Descript’s help center documents zoom as an animation you add by hand after recording, by placing start and end keyframes.

Most people who search for Descript’s price on a Mac want to record tutorials, product demos or course lessons and export a clean video. For that job, two plan limits matter more than the AI features:

  1. Resolution. Hobbyist exports up to 1080p. If you publish in 4K, you need Creator.
  2. Media minutes. Every minute you record in Descript counts, so retakes count too. Ten hours a month on Hobbyist is plenty for a weekly tutorial. A course you record in long sessions can use it up.

CursorClip vs Descript pricing

Descript is a subscription you pay every month or year. CursorClip’s lifetime license is one $70 payment, with no media-hour meter. Here is what one person pays over time at today’s list prices. These are our sums, before tax, discounts or any future price change.

Plan1 year2 years3 years5 years
Descript Hobbyist, yearly (1080p)$192$384$576$960
Descript Hobbyist, monthly$288$576$864$1,440
Descript Creator, yearly (4K)$288$576$864$1,440
Descript Creator, monthly$420$840$1,260$2,100
CursorClip lifetime$70$70$70$70
CursorClip yearly$29$58$87$145

The difference, year one and over three years

Paying $70 once instead of paying for a Descript plan comes to $122 to $350 less in the first year (64% to 83%) and $506 to $1,190 less over three years (88% to 94%):

Instead of DescriptDescript, year 1You save, year 1Descript, 3 yearsYou save, 3 years
Hobbyist, billed yearly (1080p)$192$122 (64%)$576$506 (88%)
Hobbyist, billed monthly$288$218 (76%)$864$794 (92%)
Creator, billed yearly (4K)$288$218 (76%)$864$794 (92%)
Creator, billed monthly$420$350 (83%)$1,260$1,190 (94%)

How we worked it out: saving = 1 − 70 ÷ (Descript’s yearly price × years), rounded to the nearest whole percent. For example, Hobbyist billed yearly over three years is 1 − 70 ÷ (192 × 3) = 1 − 70 ÷ 576 = 88%. Prices are for one person, before tax. Descript’s come from descript.com/pricing on 10 October 2026. Business ($600 a year per person, billed yearly) adds team features CursorClip doesn’t compete with, so it is left out.

If you export in 4K, Creator is the fair comparison: Hobbyist stops at 1080p, and CursorClip’s 4K export preset is on every license. See CursorClip pricing for the yearly and monthly options.

These savings only count if screen recording is most of what you need. Descript also edits by transcript, adds captions, cleans up audio with AI, records podcasts and runs on Windows and the web, and CursorClip does none of that. This is a comparison of payment models, not of products: where Descript is worth the money and where CursorClip is the wrong choice are spelled out further down.

Descript student, education and nonprofit discount

Descript offers one discounted plan, which it calls EDU/NFP. Per its help center on 10 October 2026:

  • Price: $8 per editor a month billed yearly ($96 a year), or $12 billed monthly.
  • Who qualifies: students, teachers and academic staff at accredited institutions, and nonprofits with 501(c)(3) or equivalent status.
  • What you get: everything in Hobbyist, including 1080p watermark-free export and 10 media hours a month.
  • How to apply: create a free account with your school or nonprofit email, add a payment method, and submit Descript’s application form. Descript reviews it and replies by email.

Descript says this is the only plan it sells at a discount.

Is there a Descript lifetime deal?

No, not from Descript. Its pricing page lists a Free plan, three subscriptions and Enterprise, and nothing you can buy once. If you stop paying, the drive drops to Free at the end of the period you paid for, with its 720p watermarked exports.

Cancelling Descript, and refunds

From the cancellation article in Descript’s help center and its refund policy, checked 10 October 2026:

  • Cancelling is the same as downgrading to Free. Your plan stays active until the end of the billing period, then the drive moves to the Free plan.
  • Your projects stay accessible, but paid features stop working. Any top-up balance is kept but cannot be used on Free.
  • Plan refunds are available within 48 hours of the invoice date. Editor seat refunds are available within 7 days.
  • No prorated refunds. If you cancel partway through a monthly or annual term, Descript does not refund the unused time. Top ups are never refunded.

That 48-hour window matters on an annual plan. If you pay $288 for a year of Creator and decide on day three that it is not for you, the plan runs to the end of the year and the money stays spent.

Descript on a Mac: what to check first

  • macOS version. The system requirements in Descript’s help center list macOS 14 Sonoma or later as the minimum, so Descript does not run on macOS 13. They recommend an Intel 7th-generation or Apple silicon M1 or newer chip and 16GB of memory (32GB for 4K on an Intel Mac).
  • Internet. Descript recommends at least 50 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up. Its help article on saving says “Descript doesn’t support offline editing”: edits sync to the cloud as you make them. The screen recorder uploads your recording in the background while you record.
  • Built on Electron. Descript’s own engineering blog post on rebuilding the app says it was built as an Electron application, and the Mac build Descript served for download on 2 October 2026 contained the Electron framework.
  • Recording length. The screen recorder has a 4-hour limit per recording, per its screen recorder guide.

CursorClip, for comparison, is a native Mac app for macOS 13.5 Ventura and later, on Intel and Apple silicon. It works offline after a one-time license activation, and your recordings are saved on your Mac.

Where Descript is worth the money

Descript earns its subscription when the editing is the hard part of your work.

  • Editing by text. You edit the transcript like a document and the video follows. For long narration, interviews and podcasts, nothing else here is as fast.
  • Podcasts and remote interviews. Rooms records up to 10 participants with separate tracks and backup recordings, and Descript transcribes multitrack sessions with speaker labels.
  • Captions and translation. Dynamic captions are included on every plan, and paid plans include caption translation into 61 languages and audio dubbing into 30.
  • AI cleanup. Studio Sound, filler word removal, Remove Retakes, Eye Contact and AI speech for fixing a misspoken word.
  • Any footage. Descript edits files you import, from any camera or app, not only what it recorded.
  • Teams and other platforms. Comments, live collaboration, shared drives and Brand Studio, on Mac, Windows and the web.

If two or more of those describe your week, Descript is likely worth the price, and CursorClip will not replace it.

When a one-time Mac recorder is enough

If you mostly record your own screen, export an MP4 and upload it to YouTube, a course platform or your docs, you may be paying Descript for features you never open.

CursorClip covers that job and nothing more:

  • Automatic zoom while you record. It places zooms from your clicks, so the recording already follows the action when you stop. You can add, remove or retime any zoom point. Descript’s help center documents zoom as an animation you add by hand.
  • Screen, camera, system audio and microphone in one take, with camera layouts and a built-in teleprompter.
  • 4K and 60fps export presets on every license, and MP4 or GIF output. The recording frame rate is limited by your display and capture size.
  • No media-hour meter. Recordings are local files, not minutes drawn from a monthly allowance.
  • Pay once. $70 for a lifetime license on up to 3 Macs, or $29 a year, or $9 a month. Free to record and edit. A license to export. Every plan has a 14-day money-back guarantee.

Where CursorClip is the wrong choice

Do not buy CursorClip if you need any of these: editing by transcript, captions, AI voice or audio cleanup, filler word removal, podcast or remote interview recording, translation or dubbing, hosted share links or team review, Windows, or a multi-track timeline.

And one limit matters more than all of those: CursorClip cannot open a video it did not record. If you want to polish footage already on your disk, use Descript, or the free QuickTime and iMovie. CursorClip only helps with your next recording, by making it need less editing.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Descript cost in 2026?

On 10 October 2026, descript.com/pricing listed Hobbyist at $16, Creator at $24 and Business at $50 per person a month billed yearly, or $24, $35 and $65 billed monthly. That is $192, $288 and $600 a year on annual billing. There is also a Free plan at $0, and Enterprise is quoted by sales.

Is Descript free?

Descript has a Free plan with no credit card. It includes 60 media minutes a month, 100 AI credits once (they do not refill), 720p export with a watermark, and 5GB of cloud storage. It is enough to try text-based editing, not to publish clean videos. Watermark-free export starts at Hobbyist.

Can I pay for Descript monthly?

Yes. Every paid plan is offered monthly or yearly. Monthly costs more: Hobbyist is $24 instead of $16, Creator $35 instead of $24, and Business $65 instead of $50, per person a month. Descript says annual billing saves up to 35%.

What are Descript media hours, and do they roll over?

Media hours (Descript also calls them media minutes) count every minute you record in Descript or upload, whether or not you transcribe it. Free gets 1 hour a month, Hobbyist 10, Creator 30 and Business 40, per editor. Unused minutes do not roll over. Creator and Business can buy top ups: 5 hours for $25, 20 for $80 or 50 for $150.

Does Descript have a student or education discount?

Yes. Students, educators, academic staff and qualifying nonprofits can apply for Descript’s EDU/NFP plan at $8 per editor a month billed yearly, or $12 billed monthly. It includes the Hobbyist plan’s features, and Descript says it is the only discounted plan it offers.

Is there a Descript lifetime deal or one-time purchase?

Not on Descript’s own pricing page. It lists a Free plan, three monthly or yearly subscriptions and Enterprise, and nothing you pay for once. If what you need is a Mac screen recorder you buy once, CursorClip has a $70 lifetime license.

Can I cancel Descript and get a refund?

You can cancel from your plan settings at any time. The plan stays active to the end of the period you paid for, then the drive moves to the Free plan and your projects stay accessible. Descript refunds a plan only within 48 hours of the invoice date, an added editor seat within 7 days, and never refunds top ups or unused time.

Does Descript work on a Mac?

Yes. Descript runs on macOS, Windows and in the browser. Descript requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later and recommends an Intel 7th-generation or Apple silicon chip, 16GB of memory, and a 50 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload connection. Descript does not support offline editing.

Does Descript zoom in automatically when you screen record?

Descript’s help center documents zoom as an animation you add to a clip by hand, setting where it starts and ends. We found no automatic, cursor-following zoom in its screen recorder documentation or its screen recorder page (checked 10 October 2026). CursorClip places zooms from your clicks while you record, and you can edit each one.

Is Descript’s screen recorder free?

Yes, the recorder is included on every Descript plan, including Free. But every minute you record counts against your monthly media minutes (60 on Free), and Free exports at 720p with a watermark. Watermark-free 1080p export starts at Hobbyist, $16 a month billed yearly.

Does CursorClip replace Descript?

Only for one job. CursorClip is a Mac screen recorder with automatic zoom, sold once for $70. It has no transcript editing, no captions, no AI voice tools, no share links, no Windows version, and it cannot open a video it did not record. If you mostly record your own screen for tutorials and demos and export the video, it covers that. If you edit podcasts or other footage by text, Descript is the tool.

How this was sourced

Every Descript price, plan limit and policy above was read from Descript’s own pricing page, its screen recorder page and its help center on 10 October 2026. The help center articles used are the ones on media minutes and AI credits, top ups, the refund policy, cancelling, the EDU/NFP plan, the billing overview, system requirements, saving, the screen recorder and custom zoom. Each is named where it is used, so you can find it on help.descript.com. Monthly and yearly prices were matched to the annual and monthly amounts in the plan data the pricing page embeds, not guessed from the toggle. The Electron fact comes from Descript’s engineering blog and from the Mac build its download page served on 2 October 2026. No aggregator, review site or forum was used as a source for any price or capability.

Nothing in this article was tested. Every Descript capability is Descript’s own claim about its product. CursorClip’s capabilities come from its own source code and pricing page.
